SASA Peer Leader
The Summer Academic Success Academy (SASA) Peer Leader supports incoming first-year students as they transition to college life. Peer Leaders serve as mentors, tutors, and role models while living in the residence hall for the duration of the program. Each Peer Leader is assigned a small cohort of students and works closely with program staff, faculty, and residence life professionals to promote academic success, engagement, and community building.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and provide direct support for a pre-assigned group of students
Help students navigate the campus layout and access buildings where classes, workshops, and activities are hosted - Ensure participants attend all required classes, workshops, study halls, and program activities
- Develop and implement individualized student success plans
- Assist students with setting SMART goals and hold them accountable for progress
- Share personal college experiences and success strategies, including time management, stress management, and use of campus resources
- Serve as a peer mentor and tutor; oversee daily supplemental instruction and study hall sessions
- Work collaboratively with faculty to support student learning and engagement
- Build a strong sense of community among students, Peer Leaders, staff, faculty, Resident Advisors, and campus partners
- Create and facilitate daily activities that promote community engagement
- Assist with setting up activities sponsored by Cultivating & Embracing Chance, Inc.
- Attend all scheduled outings with the assigned student group
- Support meetings and activities hosted by Resident Advisors
- Conduct nightly residence hall walk-throughs
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and academic success strategies
- Maintain confidentiality of student information
- Be knowledgeable about campus resources and make appropriate referrals when needed
- Enforce Coppin State University student conduct expectations and SASA rules and regulations
- Attend mandatory weekly meetings with SASA program administrators
Complete other duties as assigned by program staff
Eligibility & Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Willingness to live on campus for the duration of the program
- Commitment to student success and engagement
Preferred:
- Previous experience as a SASA Peer Leader
- Prior participation as a SASA student/attendee
- Experience in peer mentoring, tutoring, residence life, or student leadership
- Familiarity with campus resources and support services
- On campus leadership
